Abstract
A rotary kiln, used for dead burning Salem magnesite in Burn Standard Co, Salem sometimes had to be shut down due to ring formation. To understand the chemical and physical characteristics of such rings, samples collected from the rotary kiln, were studied and the results have been reported briefly in this article. The dead burning campaign of the rotary kiln, from which the samples for investigation were collected, started on 2.1.1981 with a feed of crude-mag and chrome powder, and continued with crude-mag with or without mill scale. The iron oxide in the sinter was 1.7-2.5 per cent. The results obtained are given below (Table I). The kiln was shut down for heavy rear ring formation. After cooling, samples were collected systematically, lengthwise, from the front, middle and rear rings. Samples were collected from the locations as shown in Fig. 1. The results of the chemical analysis and the physical properties of the samples are given in Table II.
