Abstract
Smoke nuisance in coal fired furnaces ued in the ceramic industry is appalling. Besides the emission of gases like sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO) etc about 0.5 to 0.6 tonne (500-600 kg) of carbon and dust particles are emitted to the air from a furnace consuming 10 tonnes of coal per firing. The poisonous effects of the gases can be minimized considerably by dilution when they are released in atmosphere through chimneys of suitable height. However, the particulate pollution (e.g. due to unbumt carbon and ash) because of the release in comparatively large quantities, cannot be avoided, and its effect demands due attention towards its control and monitoring. Applicability of some smoke control devices has been discussed in the light of the conditions prevailing in the ceramic kilns in the country and some measures for controlling smoke have been discussed.
