| Light weight insulating bricks were produced by incorporating
sawdust into clay followed by firing at 1250°C. Four
different sizes of sawdust ( -1680 to + 595 ~m, -595 to
+420 ~m,- 420 to +250 ~m and -250 to+ 149 ~m) were
used. It was observed that the bulk density, thermal conductivity
and cold crushing strength of the products
changed significantly with the sawdust content. The effect
of the size of sawdust on the thermal conductivity was not
evaluated. The size was observed to have minor effect on
the bulk density. For the same percentage of sawdust, the
bulk density of the specimens produced by using the finer
sawdust was found to be higher. A very clear effect of the
size of sawdust was observed on the cold crushing strength.
The finer the size of sawdust, the higher was the cold crushing
strength. The difference in cold crushing strength due
to the size effect was found to vary with the sawdust content.
The maximum difference was observed in the range
6-7% of sawdust content. |
