Abstract
The technological innovations in iron and steel making processes and development of superior quality refractories have reduced specific refractory consumption significantly. More than 70% of refractory consumption in Japanese iron and steel works is in torpedo ladle cars, converters, electric arc furnaces, ladles and continuous casters. This paper highlights the current status of technological development of the refractories, viz. AI20,-C, AI20,-SiC-C, MgO-C, spinel castahles and other refractories used for BOF, electric arc furnaces and ladle furnaces. It also covers the design aspects of refractories used in various furnaces/vessels which ultimately result in higher quality, more safety and lower cost of steel production.
