Abstract
Spodumene is well known as a lithia bearing nux and a low expansion filler in whiteware bodies. In the present work, an attempt has been made to develop a cost-effective processing of mullite ceramics using spodumene at a nux. It has been observed that mullite based ceramics can be effectively prepared from low cost silica fume and electrostatic precipitated alumina dust raw materials where spodumene acts as a sintering nux. The latter (10 wt%) has also been found to enhance the degree of mullitization; however, an addition of 20 wt% spodumene lowers the yield of mullite due to formation of a ~-quartz solid solution.
