Abstract
Engobe is an intermediate layer between the body and glaze of a ceramic article, used to cover surface defects in the article and to provide suitable base for coloured or transparent glaze. It is applied on all types of ceramic articles ranging from earthenware to structural materials. According to the requirement nonvitreous or vitreous engobe is applied, these consist of natural white burning clay or clay in conjunction with non-plastics and fluxes.
