Abstract
Compaction of granular ceramic powders under pressure has been investigated. The bulk density (BD) of these powders increases with the pressu1·e p (P) applied from one end according to the relationship B =a+ bP + c, a, b and c being constants. Analyses of the data indicate that compaction occurs by two simultaneously operating mechanisms. The suggested mechanisms are (i) compaction by sliding of particles and (ii) compaction by the entry of fines produced by crushing, into available voids. The binding agents like sulphitelye etc., have only a lubricating effect and they do not appear to alter the trend of compaction.
