Abstract
The effect of alkali on the pH and viscosity of dilute H-clay suspension was studied with reference to the variation of b.e.c. and surface area of some clay minerals and their mixtures. It was observed that kaolinite and montmorillonite with high b.e.c. and surface area have a distinct dibasic character whereas those with low b.e.c. and surface area are essentially monobasic in nature.
