Abstract
OFTEN times metallurgical and ceramic plant laboratories need a high temperature furnace for small scale trials of melting or similar heat treatment work above temperatures of 1400°C within day time schedule of working. The electric furnaces available in the market for such work are difficult to maintain or operate for want of spare resistor elements like Silicon Carbide, Molybdenum disilicide, platinum and graphite, all of which have to be imported and are very difficult to obtain. Oil, even at its best performance would develop temperatures up to 1450°C or so with great difficulty and one is not aware of any oil fired furnace in the market that can reach 1500°C without any recuperative arrangement. If any such furnace is at all made available, temperature pick up is extremely slow extending over several hours. Oil furnaces suffer a further disadvantage in that at high temperatures furnace atmospheres are difficult to control.
