| The influence of Mg+2, Ca+2, Na+, K+ and Fe+3 on the formation ofmullitefrom a
pure kaolinite clay has been investigated quantitatively by X-ray diffractometry. The
mullite contents of the samples varied between 40 and 60% (the corresponding yield of
mullite being 62.5 and 93.8 %) . Introduction of the cations into the clay structure by base
exchange reaction led to greater mullitization compared to the results obtained on
mechanical mixtures of clay and salts of the same cations. No simple correlations have
been observed between mullite contents and ionic radii, potentials and cation-oxygen
bond strengths. |
