Abstract
The formation of Na-A zeolite from a locally available kaolinitic lithomargic clay was investigated. Influence of several factors, e.g. temperature during heat treatment of clay prior to reaction with caustic soda solution, SiO./ Al20 3 ratio of clay, concentration of the alkali, reaction .period, temperature and pressure during reaction and crystallization on the nature of products formed was examined. Depending on Na20/H20 ratio, time and temperature of reaction and crystallization, either zeolite Na-A or the felspathoid hydroxysodalite was formed as the single crystalline phase from the heat activated lithomargic clay. The cubic form of zeolite-P was obtained in small amount in association with either zeolite Na-A or hydroxysodalite. Zeolite Na-X formed, as an exception under a particular condition. The nature and extent of zeolite formation do not depend upon the ratio of Si02 and Al20 3 in the clay but on the extent of their solubility in alkali.
