Abstract
Electrical conductivity of both pure and Y20 3-doped (up to 15 m/o)
barium cerate (BaCe03) has been measured in the temperature range
of 600°-1000°C under different gaseous atmospheres. The conductivity
increases with increasing Y20 3 content up to 10 m(o and then
remains approximately constant. The activation energy is also found
to vary with Y20 3 content; the. value initially increases and then
decreases. The specimens exhibit partial p-type conduction indicated
by the increase in conductivity value with increasing oxygen partial
pressure. The extent of p-type conduction decreases with increasing
concentration of Y20 3• In doped specimens, CeH ions are partly substituted
by the v•~ ions producing oxygen vacancies which enhance
oxygen ion conduction.
