Abstract
Because of the poor crystalline nature and presence of interlayer water molecnles in many phyllosilicates, special pre-treatment as well as analytical procedures are required. One of these procedures consists of lyophilizing the sample before analysis. It is stressed that phyllosilicate samples should not be polished as it risks to cause structural disorganization.· The acceleration voltage recommended is 15 kV. Few representative micrographs of vermicnlite mineral are presented for comparison.
