Abstract
The purpose of this article is to illustrate the application of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for understanding ionic cond.uction in glasses. First, we brietly describe the kinds of information one may expect to obtain f~·om XPS on glasses: this is followed by comments on two major experimental concerns with this technique. Two examples are discussed wherein XPS data contribute significantly to the understanding of ionic conductivity.
