Abstract
Boron carbide (B4C) whiskers and platelets have been synthesized via carbothermal reduction of B2O3. Carbon black and B2O3 were used as raw materials. K2CO3 and NiCl2 were used to facilitate the growth of whiskers and platelets. The formation of B4C was studied in the temperature range of 940° to 1500°C in 1-atm argon. Whiskers and platelets of different sizes formed at 1200°-1500°C. Thin B4C whiskers formed were electron-transparent. The best result was obtained at 1500°C.
