Abstract
India is a country with an ancient civilisation and culture and early Indian society was classified on a basis of professions. Such classification has ultimately led to the present day caste system although the basis on which such cJagsification was originally made is no longer strictly followed. The ancients recognised early the necessity of running industries on cottage lines. This was with a view to making individual village units self-sufficient and to avoid the possibility of unnecessary compet1t10n. Amongst such cottage industries, pottery was one and the need of the pottery industry was so well-recognised that every village lnd a potter as an essential unit in the structure of the corp Hate life of the village. Even to this day indigenous earthenware mad:' by the Indian potter are an indispensable requirement in Indian village homes.
