Abstract
In a Steel Plant many failures take place and the refractory technologist is called upon to overcome these problems. In finding out the solution to such problems and also ~o pinpoint the real cause of the failure of the refractory material, the after service examination of refractories or Post-mortem is a very useful tool in the hand of the Refractory Engineers. Such a study helps to formulate a proper specification, and a correct method of control on the quality of the material. It may also lead to modifications or change either in the design or in the operation technique. In this paper the various methods of Post-mortem examination followed in the Tata Iron and Steel Company and the various problems tackled during the investigations on the failures of hot blast main, bustle pipes of blast furnaces, etc are reviewed. As a result of these investigations, certain changes have been incorporated in the design which eliminated these problems.
