Abstract
Attempts were made to develop mullite bodies with desired properties for special applications. Mullite was prepared by calcination of alumina and clay from indigenous sources. Bodies capable of sintering at 1500°C were prepared using synthetic mullite with some amount of raw mix. Mullite ware of a density over 90% theoretical with no open porosity and sufficient thermal shock resistance were prepared by slip casting and sintering at 1400°C. Thermal shock resistance and permeability of the ware have been studied.
