Abstract
Due to hydration and dehydration of the cement component
in the refractory concrete, crackings are generally observed
on tunnel kiln car tops. They also exhibit a retrogression
property in strength during operation. These two defects
impede the efficient use of refractory concrete as tunnel
kiln hearth material.
The present investigation relates to the development of a
better quality refractory concrete minimising the above
defects. Trials have been made with various amounts of
soda lime silica glass. Compositions with 10 per cent glass
content show a continuous transition from hydraulic to
ceramic bonding without any appreciable decrease in
strength of the concrete on heat treatment at various temperatures.
The obtained results are found suitable for
further follow-up actions.
