Abstract
It has been established that sintering behaviour of uo2
powders prepared by decomposition of ADU depend on the
calcination temperature. Powders heated close to the decomposition
temperature have a low optimum sintering
temperature and a low activation energy of sintering. However,
these powders are pyrophoric, have a high surface area
and do not have good flow and packing characteristics. To
enable the retention of adequate sinterability and at the
same time improve the powder characteristics, it was
suggested that the powders can be exposed to high temperature
for a very short time; whereby the surface becomes
relatively inactive, leaving a major part of the activity
within the powder. It was found that such powders have
desirable physical properties and at the same time retain
adequate sinterability.
